Join Women@NCSA on Wednesday, February 6 from 1:30-2:30pm in room 1030 for a talk entitled "Careers in Progress, or 'The Roads Not Taken.'" This event will feature Melissa Cragin, Executive Director of the Midwest Big Data Hub. Prior to joining NCSA, Melissa was Staff Associate in the Office of the Assistant Director, Directorate of Biological Sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF), after serving there as an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow. At NSF, she guided development of data policy and accelerated community engagement on research data management and public access. Melissa also has an appointment as Assistant Professor in the School of Information Sciences at Illinois, where she previously led the Data Curation Education Program.

Abstract: Career paths aren't always visible. Finding one's way to "what we do," reconciling choices, and clarifying contributions are just as important as the jobs we hold. Work today is complex, filled with organizational and process dependencies; variation in vocabularies, communication, and personal interaction styles; "orchestration" challenges; and institutional constraints. And yet, we all are part of making amazing things happen for science, education, business, and society. Melissa, who's research background includes studies of how work happens, will give a short talk on her path to Data Science and the Midwest Big Data Hub.

Refreshments will be served. RSVP and invite others via our Facebook event!
