Title: Reference Architecture of a Quantum-Centric Supercomputer

Abstract:
Quantum computers can simulate systems beyond classical limits, but scaling research in fields like chemistry requires integrating them with high-performance computing (HPC). Currently, these systems operate in isolation, forcing manual orchestration that hinders algorithmic exploration. This motivates the need for Quantum-Centric Supercomputing (QCSC): a flexible architecture integrating QPUs, GPUs, and CPUs.
We envision QCSC evolving through three phases: (1) quantum systems as specialized compute offload engines within existing HPC complexes; (2) heterogeneous quantum and classical HPC systems coupled through advanced middleware, enabling seamless execution of hybrid quantum–classical algorithms; and (3) fully co-designed heterogeneous quantum–HPC systems for hybrid computational workflows. We will outline a reference architecture and roadmap for these QCSC systems.

Short Bio:
Hiroshi Horii is a Senior Technical Staff Member, serving as Head of IBM Quantum Japan and Senior Manager of QCSC Software Research in IBM Quantum. His research interests include HPC–quantum integration, with a focus on resource management, programming models, and workflow technologies. He leads a wide range of collaborations with external researchers to demonstrate quantum-centric supercomputing applications.
