The Shawnee National Forest, Friends of the Shawnee National Forest, and University of Illinois Extension are partnering to host invasive species removal days specifically targeting autumn olive shrubs. These events will take place at Bay Creek Wilderness on Tuesdays in November and at Snake Road on Wednesdays.

Volunteers can choose from two shifts: 10:00 AM to noon or noon to 2:00 PM. For those interested in signing up for both shifts, please bring lunch, as we will take a break to refuel during midday.

During the event, we will be using brush cutters to remove invasive autumn olive shrubs. Volunteers will take turns operating the brush cutters and moving or pulling plants to a designated area on site. Trained volunteers and FS employees will then apply herbicide to the cut stumps.

Please be aware that the terrain may be uneven and may present some tripping hazards. The USFS will provide tools and personal protective equipment for all volunteers.

University of Illinois Extension and the USDA Shawnee National Forest provide equal opportunities in programs and employment. If you have any questions or need accommodations, or are unable to attend, please email Aylssa Macuiba at Alyssa.Macuiba@usda.gov.
