Physics - Astrophysics, Relativity, and Cosmology Seminar

Gravitational-wave astronomy has matured into an exciting and fast developing field with implications for astrophysics, nuclear physics, gravity theory and cosmology. In this talk, I will summarize this progress, highlighting my work in creating new ways to use gravitational-wave data to learn about fundamental physics and astrophysics. This will include probes of the basic nature of gravitational waves (polarization and dispersion), the measurement of black hole spins and kicks, and the spectroscopic study of ringing black holes. I will conclude by making the case that the future of gravitational wave astronomy is bright: with the prospect of next generation observatories in space and on the ground, the greatest discoveries are yet to come.
