Title: Making Equity-Mindedness a Practice

Ross Wantland is a farm-raised, social justice and violence prevention educator with nearly 20 years of experience in higher education. This past summer, Ross began working at the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion after having previously worked as the Director of Diversity & Social Justice Education and the Sexual Assault Prevention Educator in the Women’s Center. In his current role, Ross provides training, coaching, and coordination around equity efforts on campus. Ross lives in Champaign with his amazing psychologist partner, their emo kid, pets, and can be found tending his COVID garden.

Whether in the lab or classroom, material inequities and differential treatment can lead to negative impacts on the people and products of the group. How can we create spaces that maximize group diversity and promote fairness? In this session, Ross will lead a conversation about strategies to promote equity, fairness, and excellence – and our individual responsibility to be equity-minded.
