What was the Reconstruction Era, and why does its history matter for us in Illinois today? Following the Civil War, Reconstruction (1865–1877) confronted fundamental questions about freedom, Black citizenship, racial equality, and belonging. Although centered in the former Confederate South, these struggles were national and shaped Illinois, with its own history of racial exclusion and its later role as a destination for Black migration. Drawing from Facing History & Ourselves’ The Reconstruction Era and the Fragility of Democracy, this session explores teaching this history is essential to helping students understand citizenship and democracy in the United States today.
