TITLE: SARGENT & LUNDY INTRODUCTION, TRANSMISSION PLANNING AND POWER SYSTEM STUDIES OVERVIEW

ABSTRACT

Sargent & Lundy (S&L) is one of the oldest and most experienced full-service consulting-engineering firms in the world. Founded in 1891, the firm is a global leader in power and energy with expertise in: all forms of electric power generation; power transmission and distribution; grid modernization; energy storage; fuel infrastructure; and energy consulting. S&L serves public and private sector clients in the power and energy, government, natural gas distribution, industrial, mining, and other heavy industrial sectors. This presentation will provide overview and project examples of advanced power system studies and analysis S&L performs, with a specific focus on integration of new technologies into the transmission system. This includes Voltage Source Converter (VSC) High Voltage DC (HVDC) transmission systems, inverter-based resources, offshore wind resources, and Battery Energy Storage Systems.

BIOGRAPHY

Eric Hope is a December 2009 graduate from UIUC with a MS degree in ECE. He joined Sargent & Lundy in 2013 with the preparation of AC auxiliary power system calculations. He supports transmission and distribution utility clients and generation developer clients from project conception to operation. His support includes project feasibility studies, conceptual design, application support, equipment sizing and specification development, detailed design, and root cause fault/failure analysis. Mr. Hope has extensive experience in power system analytical studies. He is the S&L subject matter expert on the application of inverter-based resources. He participates in various IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) committees and standards development activities. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Illinois and Maryland.

Sang Gang is a 2003 graduate from UIUC with a BS degree in ECE. He is a Vice President of consulting services who joined Sargent & Lundy in 2008. Mr. Gang leads a variety of conventional power plant and renewable energy consulting engagements with utility and IPP clients worldwide. Mr. Gang also leads many of Sargent & Lundy’s utility planning projects including cost and performance evaluation of various generation and interconnection options, long-term power supply planning, power procurement administration, and transmission and distribution planning. He also provides support for project development, owner’s engineering, technical due diligence, independent engineering, construction monitoring, condition assessment, and technical advisory services for coal, gas, nuclear, and renewable, energy storage, and transmission projects throughout the world. Mr. Gang is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois.
