How to Get the Most out of a Career Fair

Before the Fair:
- Create your account on the CareerEco platform: https://go.illinois.edu/ACES_LAS_Virtual
- Ensure your Handshake @ Illinois account is updated with your current GPA, skills, and experiences
- Research the organizations that might be of interest to you (and what positions they may have available)
- Know why you're there...why are you interested in working for their organizations?
- Type up a short verbal summary/elevator pitch so that you can cut and paste it into the employer chat room
- Write out questions for each employer so you can quickly type (or paste) those to the employer
- Develop a strong resume, have it critiqued, and upload it to your Handshake @ Illinois account (have several more than you think you'll need)

During the Fair:
- Take the initiative to introduce yourself
- Write down the representative's name (so you can follow up with a thank you email)
- 'Warm up'...start with a company that is number 4 or 5 on your list before heading to your top choice
- Connect with organizations you had not considered before and take initiative to engage in meaningful conversations
- Ask if an employer plans to conduct interviews (or what the next steps/timeline would be)

After the Fair:
- Send a thank you email
- Ensure your voicemail is not full and consider answer numbers you don't recognize, in case a prospective employer calls
- Stay connected with your Career Services office...we are here for you every step of the way!
