Fidelity in simulation – How real is real enough?
Simulation is an engaging educational modality available to health professions educators, and it can also be resource intensive. When designing a simulation-based intervention, how much fidelity is needed to meet the learning objectives? From DIY models to freely available mobile apps, there are many options in addition to a traditional simulation “lab” resources available to educators. These resources and the contexts in which “low fidelity” can be effective will be presented with the goal of empowering attendees to maximize the value offered by the modality of simulation.
Learning Objectives:
- Define three types of fidelity and their relationship to structuring simulation based encounters
- Summarize the evidence connecting fidelity to educational outcomes
- Describe at least 3 examples of low cost or low fidelity simulation tools
