Getting Real About the Transfer of Learning: Questioning the role of authenticity, realism, and fidelity in instructional design and simulation
Summary
Learners often struggle to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom into clinical practice, i.e., learners are unable to successfully transfer their learning. One common strategy to support learners’ transfer is to provide more authentic, realistic, and high-fidelity learning experiences. However, these strategies have not shown to consistently improve learning. This presentation will clarify phenomenon of transfer in health professions education and offer alternative instructional strategies for educators to consider in their efforts to support learners’ transfer.
