"Updates and Innovation: Fetal Intervention for Myelomeningocele and Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia" will cover new developments in the treatment of fetal myelomeningocele to provide opportunities for improved neonatal outcomes while minimizing the risk for maternal complications. Fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion (FETO) offers hope for improved lung growth in fetuses with the most severe forms of congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Dr. Aimen Shaaban will discuss the impact of these interventions and how families are cared for at the Chicago Institute for Fetal Health. To be presented by Aimen Shaaban, MD, Director, the Chicago Institute for Fetal Health at Lurie Children’s Hospital.

Objectives:

  • Review the physiology and consequences of fetal neural tube defects.
  • Discuss the aims and outcomes of the MOMS trial evaluating the efficacy of fetal MMC repair
  • Discuss the goals of fetoscopic MMC repair and review maternal and fetal outcomes of fetoscopic vs open fetal repair
  • Review the physiology and assessment of fetal congenital diaphragmatic hernia
  • Discuss the goals and outcomes of the use of FETO: fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion, in the treatment of severe cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
