Creative Writing Upcoming Events

A poetry reading by Alumni of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Made possible by the Robert J. and Katherin Carr visiting author series. Featuring Laura Bandy, John Milas, Adam Deutsch.

Laura Bandy attended the University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Writers PhD program from 2009 to 2013, where she received the Joan Johnson Poetry Award. In 2018, she won first prize in the 'Trio of Triolets' contest judged by Allison Joseph, and received third place in the Illinois Emerging Writers Competition that same year. She has had work published in Soft Skull's Saints of Hysteria: A Half-Century of Collaborative American Poetry, Ninth Letter,  River Styx, The Florida Review, and The Laurel Review among others, and her chapbook, Hack, was published by Dancing Girl Press in August 2021. Her first full-length poetry collection, Monster Movie, is out from Gold Wake Press (2023) and available for purchase. She teaches at a community college near the Iowa border. Laura hails from Jacksonville, Illinois, home of the Ferris wheel. 

John Milas is the author of the novel THE MILITIA HOUSE (Henry Holt, 2023). He earned both his BA and MFA in creative writing. As a student, he studied with writers such as Marianne Boruch, Roxane Gay, Brian Leung, Robert Lopez, Terese Marie Mailhot, Julie Price Pinkerton, Donald Platt, Sharon Solwitz, and others. He grew up in Illinois, where he currently reads, writes, and watches baseball.

Adam Deutsch is the author of a full-length collection, Every Transmission (Fernwood Press 2023). He has work recently in Poetry International, Thrush, Juked, AMP Magazine, Ping Pong, and Typo, and has a chapbook called Carry On (Elegies). He teaches in the English Department at Grossmont College and is the publisher of Cooper Dillon Books. He lives with his spouse and child in San Diego, CA. AdamDeutsch.com
