The discovery of quasars made a new science out of astronomy. It is not an overstatement to claim that the current “modern age” of space telescopes, precision cosmology, and high-power computer simulations have all been driven, in large part, by the steady flow of cosmic knowledge unveiled by the study of quasar absorption lines. It is the missing light from atomic scale electron photo-absorbing transitions and ionizations by which the universe has revealed itself across all time and scales- from dark ages to the present epoch and from the underdense voids to the overdense clusters. Before quasars were discovered, we had no knowledge of (nor no way of observing) the intergalactic medium, the global chemical evolution of the universe, the global ionization structure and history of the universe, the cosmic hydrogen and metal content and the universe, and the otherwise “invisible” physics by which galaxy evolution is regulated. Following an overview of this revolution in the astronomical sciences, some recent results and explorations will be discussed. In particular, machine learning techniques demanded by the coming era of Big Data will be addressed.
