Human-Computer Interaction Talk Series: Michelle Jensen, "Starting Where Students Are: Learning & Integrating Computer Security."

Abstract: Dedicated computer security courses do not reach every CS student, motivating efforts to integrate security throughout the curriculum. How can we build security learning from the knowledge and experiences students already bring to the classroom? In this talk, I will explore how undergraduates think about and engage with computer security tasks. I will then discuss how these insights inform efforts to integrate security throughout the CS curriculum.

Bio: Michelle Jensen is a PhD candidate in Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin –Madison with a doctoral minor in Curriculum & Instruction. They work under the guidance of Professors Rahul Chatterjee and Matthew Berland. Their research examines how undergraduate students think, learn, and engage with computer security, with a focus on integrating security throughout the CS curriculum. Teaching and mentorship are an important part of their work, and they enjoy helping students and peer mentors at UW–Madison learn, experiment, and grow.
