Title: "Some Shallow Thoughts on Deep Neural Networks"

Abstract: This talk will discuss some observed phenomena about deep neural networks using the lens(es) of dynamical systems and signal processing.

Bio: Prof. Vivek Borkar  did his undergraduate studies in the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He has held regular positions at the TIFR Centre for Applicable Mathematics and the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and IIT Bombay in Mumbai. He retired from the latter in 2020. He is a Fellow of IEEE, AMS and The World Academy of Sciences, and of various science and engineering academies in India. His research interests are broadly in applied probability, notably in stochastic optimization and control, and stochastic algorithms.
