‘Food safety in India under a cultural lens’

Cultural sensitivity is key to improving food safety, as approaches must be adapted to local practices while providing the necessary resources for change. India is no exception, where traditional practices and modern standards intersect. Hot, freshly cooked meals offer protection, yet limited refrigeration, street food hygiene issues, and the use of leftovers create risks. Often, age-old traditional beliefs shape food choices, and household food preparation plays a pivotal yet frequently undervalued role in ensuring safe practices. Moreover, in a country with significant food insecurity, implementing food safety practices becomes challenging. Despite challenges, rising consumer awareness and concern are driving gradual adoption of higher food safety standards, supported by emerging technologies that monitor quality across the supply chain.
