Presenters: 

Dr. Monica González Ybarra, Curriculum & Instruction, University of Illinois“Documenting Home & Community Knowledge Through Comic Strips”. In this workshop, Dr. Mónica González Ybarra will present research that pushes back on ideas of “official” knowledge to re-frame the teaching and learning that happens in Latinx homes and communities as legitimate. Together, participants will reflect on their own ideas of knowledge production and how they might engage in pedagogical practices to shift perceptions about the knowledge Latinx students bring to their classrooms.  

 Dr. Juanatano Cano, Los Angeles Unified School District.  "Maya American Youth do Well in School with a Strong Sense of Identity”. In this workshop, Dr. Cano will talk about his research on Maya American college students and his work experience in Los Angeles. Maya American students expressed that their firm connection to their Maya identity has helped them stand strong and not be influenced by other dominant cultures. This research has led to a series of actions to enhance the understanding of the Maya culture in the United States and how it helps the educational system to be more inclusive in their, but not limited to, K-12 programs. Also, this research helps families, community leaders, and educators expand their leadership experiences and cultural awareness of Maya American youth in the United States.

A professional development workshop for K-14 educators and librarians. Illinois K-12 educators are eligible to receive ISBE Professional Development Hours (PDH).
