What is the European Union for? What is the ultimate meaning of its actions, particularly its economic actions? Experts in European affairs can talk about the EU structure, institutions, and operations, but it is unclear if the ultimate goals of such structures and operations are properly understood. Applying the conceptual framework offered by public economics to the exceptional case of the European Union can help us to better understand the economic logic of European institutions. Please join José Luis Gómez-Barroso and the European Union Center on Tuesday, Oct. 18 in Coble Hall 108 for this brown bag talk.

About the speaker:

José Luis Gómez-Barroso is a professor in the department of Applied Economics and Economic History at UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia – Spanish National Distance Education University). His educational background includes degrees in Economics, Law and Telecommunication Engineering. His research has focused on the foundations of the digital economy and, in particular, on the role that the public sector should play in this area. Building on this, he extended his work to Public Economics in general. He is now interested in framing the activity of the European Union institutions and bodies within the context of Public Economics. José Luis Gómez-Barroso is a Fulbright-Schuman scholar affiliated with the EUC for the academic year 2022-2023.
