Latinxs have contributed to U.S. society in multiple and dynamic ways. This workshop centers Latinx histories and their relationship with the broader U.S. culture. We will collectively explore the contemporary significance and legacy of Hispanic Heritage Month through a Latina/o/x Studies framework.  K-12 educators will return to their classrooms with a critical understanding of Latinx history, the importance of Latinx representation in education, and resources to further implement Latinxs materials in the classroom.

Dr. Christian Ramirez is a Xicano scholar and specialized faculty in the Department of Latina and Latino Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana – Champaign. His training as a historical sociologist led him down a research path to study the cross-cultural exchange and rebellions forged by Indigenous and African peoples in colonial Mexico. His published and public work focus on access to Ethnic Studies for the Latinx community.
