- LAS Career Services Events
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to represent the United States in another country? What if that path started right here at Illinois?
Meet Ambassador (ret.) Eric P. Whitaker (BS ‘78 LAS, MS ‘81 AHS), back on campus! After U of I, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines, worked for the City of Lodi in California, and built a career at the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service officer. That journey led him to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Niger from 2017 to 2021. Now re-retired after a recall appointment and living in Washington, DC, he’s coming home to share the real story with you.
Ambassador Whitaker will talk openly about two big chapters of his life and answer questions like these:
The Peace Corps
- Does the Peace Corps still exist, and where does it serve?
- What do volunteers actually do?
- How do you become a volunteer, and do many Illini join?
- How can that experience shape the rest of your career?
The Foreign Service
- What is the Foreign Service, and what do diplomats do?
- Where do they serve, and what’s it like living overseas?
- How do you become a diplomat?
- What are some of his most incredible experiences?
