At City Year, we define educational equity as creating an inclusive learning environment in which all students are provided the supports, attention, and opportunities to thrive and reach their full potential. Educational equity meets students where they are and centers student voice and agency to foster a sense of safety, purpose, and belonging. This requires understanding that definitions of success and the pathway to full potential vary for each individual. Educational equity is rooted in anti-racism and requires the dismantling of existing systems of oppression – both in schools and in broader society – in order to construct new systems and promote policies, mindsets, and practices that are relevant to those who are marginalized and underserved.
