Abstract
Computing is pervasive in all areas of society and impacts virtually every aspect of our lives. As computing professionals, it is imperative that consider this in our work and attempt to understand the broader implications of the systems we design and build. This session will feature panelists who work to promote equity and social justice in computing. They will discuss their work and explain how they came to work in this space. They will provide advice for students, such as how to students can educate themselves about these issues and what they can do as students and in their careers to ensure their work positively impacts society.

Lawrence Humphrey is an engineer turned designer turned founder. After getting his B.S. in computer science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he went on to join IBM, where he worked on enterprise-wide problems in AI, design thinking, hybrid cloud, transformation, and culture. In 2020, he co-founded Tech Can [Do] Better, a non-profit consulting organization aimed at addressing racial inequities in the tech industry. Using his insights and ethos from that organization, he founded Pearl a platform for professionals to share the work, resources, and wisdom. He’s also an avid writer, skater, biker, climber, and curator of fire playlists.
