Ultrafast control of magnetism remains an important research topic from both technological and fundamental viewpoints. In the 1980s, it was proposed that electric fields could be used to directly manipulate magnetic order. Since then, the development of terahertz (THz) sources has made the electrical control of magnets at ultrafast timescales more achievable. THz electric fields can excite magnetization dynamics without heating the system. This property of THz electric fields allows the spin system to avoid the cooling process and overcome the nanoseconds speed limit. In this talk, we will go over several ways of controlling the magnetic order using THz electric fields, generation of the strong THz electric fields, and fundamental differences between metallic and insulating systems for THz control.
