The Fluxonium Qubit

Abstract: Design flexibility and scalability have made superconducting circuits a leading platform for quantum information systems. However, their macroscopic nature makes them particularly susceptible to environmental noise and decoherence. One way to fight this information loss is to tune circuit elements to make qubits that are less sensitive to the most common noise channels. In this talk, I will introduce one such qubit: the Fluxonium. I will describe the parameters that characterize the Fluxonium and explain how the fluxonium is protected from environmental decoherence. Then, I will focus on our work on building and characterizing a key feature of the Fluxonium - its large shunting inductance. Lastly, I will report on the progress we have made toward building a Fluxonium in UIUC and present our plans for the future.

This talk is intended for local QIS researchers at the University of Illinois; please do not share it more broadly.
