Abstract: This talk will discuss the use of epidemiological modeling to guide operational decisions, particularly when working with heterogeneous surveillance data and complex systems. Examples will be given across a variety of systems, including SARS-CoV-2, West Nile Virus, tick-borne disease, and zoonotic tuberculosis. The focus will be on designing models to address operational, rather than research, questions.

Speaker Bio:

Rebecca Smith is an epidemiologist with a focus on decision making from messy and incomplete data, using mathematical and statistical modeling. Her home is in the College of Veterinary Medicine, but she has affiliations at the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology (Infection Genomics for One Health theme), NCSA, and the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine. She works on a variety of topics: zoonotic tuberculosis, vector-borne diseases, menopause, and (lately) COVID-19.

All presentations will be recorded and will available on the CAII website shortly after the presentation.
