Physics - Careers Seminar

Abstract: In this talk I will discuss my transition from research to teaching at a high school and an early college while also pursuing freelance writing with outlets such as Scientific American, Physics World and New Scientist. I will point out similarities between the two, comment on time management and freelance work and offer practical tips for engaging in either.

Bio: Karmela Padavic-Callaghan, Ph. D. is an educator and science writer. She teaches physics and mathematics courses at Bard High School Early College and has written for popular science outlets such as Scientific American, Physics World and New Scientist. She earned her Ph. D. from UIUC in 2019, studying ultracold atoms and condensed matter theory with a focus on novel Bose-Einstein condensate geometries and quasiperiodicity. Karmela lives in Brooklyn, NY and when she is not teaching or writing she is a committed runner and a vegan cook.
