Children and adolescents with atopic dermatitis may experience sleep disturbance, inattention, and sometimes behavioral problems resulting from the itching and discomfort that characterize this chronic condition. Positive psychology – the study of human flourishing and positive functioning – may help promote coping strategies that in turn improve quality of life for young AD patients. In this talk, Kenny Zhang presents the results of interviews with 20 patients (ages 8-17) diagnosed with atopic dermatitis, as well as interviews with their parents. Interview transcripts were analyzed and coded based on Seligman's PERMA (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment) model of positive psychology. The study’s findings may inform development of a novel psychologic intervention for atopic dermatitis.

Kenny Zhang is a first-year medical student at Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Zhang came to CI MED with undergraduate degrees in biomedical engineering and psychology from Northwestern University. Zhang worked as a medical scribe in a dermatology practice during his gap year. His special clinical interests include dermatology and psychiatry.
