Multilingual AI Translation of Weather Information: Accuracy Validation and Impact-Focused Dissemination

Since 2014, the National Weather Service (NWS) has been advancing efforts agency-wide to translate extreme weather information into languages other than English. These initiatives culminated in the development of an automated machine translation system capable of delivering near real-time translations of NWS products in multiple non-English languages. To ensure that this emerging technology reaches its full potential, several ethical considerations must be taken during the production and dissemination of translated products. This presentation provides an overview of the NWS Automated Translation Program and introduces the development of verification metrics for machine-translated content. We also evaluate existing language proficiency measures and propose strategies to improve their effectiveness in serving multilingual communities across the United States.
