Physics - The Anthony J Leggett Institute for Condensed Matter Theory Seminar

Abstract: In the standard treatment of electrical transport in a metal, electrons and holes are assumed to undergo momentum degrading collisions in the bulk. This picture underlies the usual derivation of Ohm's law. On the other hand, transport in conventional fluids is fundamentally different because the momentum of the fluid is conserved in the bulk. With the advent of ultra-clean electronic systems like graphene, it has become possible to observe the effect of momentum conserving fluid-like behaviour in electronic systems. In this talk, I will describe two different consequences of this behaviour: 1) A strong violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law and observation of the quantum of conductance in graphene and 2) The existence of vortical transport coefficients due to Berry phase effects, which relate charge and heat currents to velocity gradients in the electron fluid.
