Sandra Barclay. Born in Lima, Peru, 1967. Formed as an architect in Lima and Paris. Master degree in Landscape and Territory at the UDP, Chile. She currently teaches at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Perú. Sandra received the 2018 Woman in Architecture Award from the London-based Architects’ Journal and Architectural Review. She is a foreign member of the French Académie d’Architecture and Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at Yale University in 2019 and 2021. Sandra was co-curator, along with J.P. Crousse, of the Peruvian Pavilion at the 15th Venice Biennale, 2016, which obtained the Special Mention of the Jury. Sandra is a member of the Jury for the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, 2021.
Jean Pierre Crousse. Born in Lima, Peru, 1963. Formed as an architect in Lima and in Milan. Master degree in Landscape and Territory at the UDP, Chile. Director of the Master Program in Architecture at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Perú. He was previously teacher at the Paris-Belleville School of Architecture, (1999- 2006), Design Critic at Harvard GSD in 2015 and Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at Yale University in 2019 and 2021. He has been Curatorial advisor for Peru, with Sharif Kahatt, for the MoMA exhibition “Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955-1980”, 2015, and Member of the jury for the Mies Crown Hall Architecture Prize, Chicago, 2016. He is a foreign member of the French Académie d’Architecture. Jean Pierre was co-curator, along with Sandra, of the Peruvian Pavilion at the 15th Venice Biennale, 2016, which obtained the Special Mention of the Jury.
Barclay & Crousse Architecture was founded in Paris, France, in 1994 and established in Lima in 2006. The studio manages a wide range of programs on a transcontinental basis, leading a design laboratory that explores the bonds between landscape, climate, and architecture. Their work challenges common notions about technology, usage, and wellbeing that, from specific conditions of developing countries, can inform and be pertinent in a global context.
Barclay & Crousse has been awarded with the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize 2018, the Oscar Niemeyer Prize 2016, the Peruvian National Prize of Architecture in 2014 and 2018 and the Latin America Prize 2013, given by the International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA), among other international prizes at the 20th Pan-American Biennale of Quito (2016), the 4th Ibero-american Biennale (2004) and the 14th Buenos Aires Biennale (2013). The “Edificio E” for the University of Piura was part of the main exhibition at the 16th Venice Biennale, 2018.
Their most relevant projects are the Equis House (2003), the Place of Remembrance (2015), the Edificio E Lecture Building at the University of Piura (2016) and the Paracas Museum (2016). In France, the restructuring of Malraux Museum in Le Havre (1999) and the 170-unit mixed housing program at Bottière-Chesnaie, Nantes (2010)
