Bio: Prof. Maria Isabel Oliver holds a Masters in Architecture from Columbia University in New York and conducted course work towards a Ph.D at Harvard University. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. She has taught at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, the University of Puerto Rico, The New School Parsons School of Design, the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and the City College of New York.

Prof. Oliver’s broad interest centers on modern architectural history and theory, with particular emphasis on Latin America. She has been the recipient of multiple grants to conduct research in Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and London. Through a grant from the American University of Sharjah she is currently working on the research The Networks of Modernization in the United Arab Emirates. Among others, she was the co-editor of the journal Archivos de Arquitectura Antillana 2016; former editor of Polimorfo journal at the ArqPoli Schoolof Architecture, Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, founder and Director of the research center iESCALA (Iniciativas de Estudios de Sociedad, Cultura y Arquitectura de Latino America) at the University of Puerto Rico, and co-organizer of the ACSA International Conference in Cuba 2002.
