Abstract:
Making and exhibiting art triggers a multitude of legal matters, some inherent in the very act of creation. IP lawyer and SAIC lecturer Silvia Beltrametti will provide insight into questions such as: "does art need to be original? to what extent can it appropriate existing expressions? what subject matter is off-limits?" drawing from examples from a wide range of artistic fields not limited to the visual arts, but including music, theatre, dance, creative writing, fashion design and motion pictures.

Bio:
Silvia Beltrametti lectures in the Department of Art History, Theory and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Dr. Beltrametti received her Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of London and her Doctorate in Jurisprudence from the University of Chicago.  Her areas of research and teaching include matters related to intellectual property in the creative industry, and the intersection of art, the art market, and the law; all areas in which she has also published widely. The recipient of numerous awards and grants, Dr. Beltrametti has served as a Legal Consultant at the UNESCO Cultural Heritage Protection Treaties Section, and in 2019 she was named as an “Emerging Leader” by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. https://www.saic.edu/profiles/faculty/silvia-beltrametti
