More info at https://globalclimatestrike.net/

Where: Bell Tower on the South Quad at the University of Urbana Champaign

When:  Friday, Sept. 20, noon - 1 pm

Faculty, students and staff from the School of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign are seizing this historic moment to creatively galvanize our community around the climate crisis. By sharing our artistic practices with each other and the public, we empower, engage, motivate and promote awareness of the complex climate issues we face within our specific regional contexts and beyond. Our course curricula respond to the geographic specificity of our local flora, fauna and infrastructure. On Friday, we will create a collaborative laboratory of performers and visual artists employing experimental approaches to engage participants in this pressing issue. The intention is to foster understanding, awareness and encourage mobilization.

Details of events: 12pm – 1pm

  • Start at the Bell Tower (Eye of Sauron) on South Quad (noon)
  • Sharing of art/design methods: Chlorophyll prints, letterpress, sculpture, etc. Work will be presented by students and faculty from A+D and Dance.
  • Walk to open field on East side of Siebel Design Center construction site, in front of mound. Performance with choreography, sculpture and sound. Contributions from: Jennifer Monson + Dance, Melissa Pokorny’s ARTS 280, Ryan Griffis’s ARTS 445.

Public demonstrations and their imagery are powerful components of our political history. Public assembly fosters communication, galvanizes further public support and moves politicians to act. As artists and educators, we are committed to forcing action on the most urgent issue of our time. Please join us!
