100 Years of Progress in Research on the Dynamics of Easterly Waves
Easterly waves are synoptic scale weather disturbances that are active during the Summer Monsoon over West Africa. They are a primary source of rainfall variability over the Sahel and seed most hurricanes in the Atlantic and many in the eastern Pacific. Owing to the unique nature of the background in which they evolve, these waves exhibit characteristics that blend potential vorticity-driven balanced dynamics and convection-driven moisture mode behavior. In this talk, I will summarize past research on these very interesting weather phenomena and attempt to highlight key open questions.
