Guest soprano Jennifer Lien joins University of Illinois faculty pianist Casey Robards in a recital of newly commissioned works for voice and piano by Justine F. Chen, Melissa Dunphy, and Kamala Sankaram. The program features Asian American texts, including poetry by Ophelia Hu Kinney, who will be present for a post-performance talkback.
This program centers Asian American lived experiences through the medium of art song, providing a counterpoint to the exoticized and fetishized stereotypes of the East traditionally found in the art form. Lobby exhibits will include a book table of Asian American literature curated by Sarah Park Dahlen and a visual art showcase by Myung-Sun Kim entitled Rituals for Healing.
Light refreshments will be provided by ISHI Sushi & Kaori’s Oven.
