Advancing Arctic Science as the World Warms
Observations show Arctic sea ice loss and greater-than-global Arctic warming in recent decades. Projecting Arctic change, and the resulting impacts is of broad interest to those living in the Arctic and beyond. In this talk, I will highlight recent work on the importance of both forcing and internal climate variability for controlling recently observed and projected future Arctic environments. How much of the observed Arctic change is due to human activities? Can the observed winds alone explain recent Arctic warming? When will the Arctic Ocean go ice-free? How are clouds and precipitation changing as the Arctic Ocean loses its sea ice? I will end by highlighting opportunities to advance science as the world continues to warm.
