Lowell Thompson, one of the first “Black Mad Men,” will show and discuss Channels Changers, his new documentary at this event. It's a story of how he and a handful of other Chicago-based African Americans “colorized” advertising starting in the 1960s Civil Rights Era.
Produced in partnership with Cotton Stevenson and Gypsy Chicago Productions, Channels Changers is the first film to chronicle the triumphs and trials of these creative trailblazers. Sprinkled with samples of their groundbreaking ads, commercials, and behind-the-scenes stories, the film will entertain and enlighten you on this important history.
Whether you’re a faculty, staff member, or student, this event has something for you. Please join us in viewing this story of Black creatives in the Chicago advertising industry. An engaging conversation with Lowell will follow the film.
This event is sponsored by the College of Media Diversity Committee and the University of Illinois Chapter of the American Advertising Federation.
