The central dusty regions of star-forming galaxies at z > 1 are now being probed by JWST and ALMA. These observations are providing insight into the mode and triggering mechanism of star formation with consequences on the growth of the bulge and its supermassive black hole. I will present ongoing coordinated studies on the internal properties of star-forming galaxies including spatially-resolved analysis at ~ kpc scales and those undergoing mergers. This effort is now being extended to determine the relevance of secular processing involving clumps, spiral arms and bars.
