The Bike Month Planning group is organizing the 14th annual Light the Night, a bike light giveaway event on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 from 4-7 pm at three locations:

  1. Alma Mater Plaza,
  2. Hallene Gateway (intersection of Illinois and Lincoln), and
  3. Campus Bike Center (51. E. Gregory Dr., Champaign)

If you would like to volunteer for this event, please fill out the Volunteer Sign-Up Form. Share it with your friends and bring them with you! Volunteers can select one of the three shifts:

  1. First half shift - 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm - will include help with the set up
  2. Second half shift - 5:15 pm to 7:15 pm - will include help with the tear down
  3. Full shift - 3:30 pm to 7:15 pm

Over the past several years, we have installed over 800-1,000 bike light sets every year, and even in 2020, we installed nearly 450 bike light sets on bikes in the Urbana-Champaign area.

In the event of heavy rain, Light the Night will be postponed to Tuesday, September 21, 2021 from 4-7 pm. Volunteers will be notified by email.

We are also organizing the annual Bike to Work Day event on the same day (September 14, 2021) from 7-10 am. See more details on Bike at Illinois events page!

Campus Bike Center Grand Re-opening Celebration is also scheduled for that week on Thursday, September 16, 2021.

Safety Plan *
To align with the health and safety best practices provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the event will be taking additional steps to ensure that the event is held safely. The volunteers will be required to follow the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign safety guidelines at this event. Since we cannot ask the volunteers to show their vaccination against COVID-19, masks will be required for the volunteers, just to be safe. We will also advise the participants to wear a mask when visiting the Light the Night stations to reduce the risk of spreading the disease.

Warning and Waiver *
COVID-19 has been declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization. COVID-19 is extremely contagious and is believed to spread mainly from person-to-person contact. While COVID-19 can cause mild symptoms in some individuals, it can lead to severe illness and even death in others. Adults over age 65 and people of any age with serious underlying medical conditions including, but not limited to, HIV, asthma and other respiratory conditions, and pregnancy, may be a higher risk for more serious complications from COVID-19. We will provide services in the community and have put in place preventative measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19; however, the Light the Night Organizing Group cannot guarantee that you will not become infected with COVID-19. By signing this agreement, I acknowledge the contagious nature of COVID-19 and voluntarily assume the risk that I may be exposed to or infected by COVID-19 by continuing to work onsite at the Light the Night event and that such exposure or infection may result in personal injury, illness, permanent disability, and death. I understand that the risk of becoming exposed to or infected by COVID-19 at the Light the Night event may result from the actions, omissions, or negligence of myself and others, including, but not limited to, Light the Night Organizing Group, volunteers, and program participants and their families. My decision to continue working onsite at the Light the Night event is voluntary, exclusively my own, and made in full understanding and acceptance of the foregoing risks.
