Abstract: I describe myself as a population ecologist, and as a quantitative ecologist and conservation geneticist, I have worked to develop novel methods to improve our ability to monitor rare and cryptic species. As part of the IUCN Species Survival Commission I have recently had the opportunity to review our current practices and applications for two groups of vulnerable and endangered species: pangolins and Asian bears. In this seminar, I will provide an honest assessment of past and current developments in population estimation and monitoring, identify where we are lacking, and consider future directions that may help us better meet conservation goals.
