Learn to Hunt - Workshops

Tree and shrub identification for those species particularly important for wildlife in Illinois.

Just as wildlife need a variety of plants for foraging, hunters need a variety of skills for hunting. An often-overlooked hunting skill is the ability to correctly identify common Illinois plant species and use this information in the hunt-planning process. With a basic understanding of plant identification and animal feeding behavior, hunters are better able to predict wildlife movements across the landscape.

What types of trees do long beards roost in? Are there any trees that compete with row crops for wildlife food production? What woody plants want to hurt me when I am in the woods? If a tree falls in the forest… well, you get the gist. If trees, shrubs or wild critters interest you, join us for this exciting and informative walk through the woods on March 18th, 2021 at 7 PM!

This webinar includes: Overview of common deciduous and evergreen tree species, along with woody shrubs and bushes that are important to wildlife in Illinois. Identification in all seasons, how and why wildlife use them and even some tips on how you may be able to improve your own yard or property for all wildlife. Being a good naturalist can make you a better hunter and enrich the time you spend in the woods. We hope to get you started right with this beginner’s level dive into the woody habitats that hunters should know about.
