Learn what historical and scientific research reveals about four topics: (1) eyewitness counts of the number of American Bison in Illinois from the late 1600s to the early 1800s, (2) earlier evidence of bison from archaeological and fossil deposits, (3) factors that influenced the abundance of bison and ultimately caused their extinction in Illinois, and (4) the ecological role of bison in the early Illinois prairie.
