Tidal marsh habitat across the Gulf of Mexico, while extensive, has declined significantly over the past 50-100 years due to a variety of impacts. While the direct impacts have been documented, the broader ecological effects, such as impacts on terrestrial vertebrates found in these ecosystems are not well studied or understood. One focus of the Mississippi State University’s Coastal Avian Ecology Lab is to study the ecology of tidal marsh birds to provide science-based data to inform regional conservation planning and restoration efforts. This presentation will focus on the techniques used to study these secretive species, the results of work with Clapper Rails and Seaside Sparrows, and highlight the utility of ecological studies to on-going, regional conservation planning and monitoring efforts.
