Making jazz more understood, appreciated, and relatable is the guiding force for JazzReach, a New York City-based not-for-profit organization that promotes, performs, creates, and teaches jazz music. Since its beginning in 1994, JazzReach has gained prominence as one of America’s leading arts organizations dedicated to jazz.

In honor of International Jazz Day, Krannert Center is partnering with JazzReach to present "How Jazz Works," an episode in the all-new JazzReach docuseries, Get Hip! Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Jazz Music. Get fresh insight into the inner workings of jazz from some of today’s top jazz artists as they explore the function and role of each individual band member and how they work together to make a cohesive, creative, and collectively experienced musical statement.

Amplifying that information and adding personal perspectives, the program will also feature a panel discussion with the following guests:

  • Crystal Womble, Co-moderator, Krannert Center Outreach Director
  • Amani Ayad, Co-moderator, UNESCO Center for Global Citizenship in Champaign-Urbana
  • Hans Schuman, Artistic Director, JazzReach
  • Tito Carrillo, Associate Professor of Jazz Trumpet and bandleader
  • Nathaniel Banks, Co-founder, Banks Bridgewater Lewis Fine Arts Academy
  • Ron Bridgewater, Associate Professor of Jazz Saxophone and Co-founder, Banks Bridgewater Lewis Fine Arts Academy

This event will last approximately 75 minutes. Audience members will not appear on camera and will have the opportunity to write questions in the online chat area throughout the event for consideration during the question-and-answer portion. This event can be viewed on demand following the live stream through May 7, 2021, at 5pm CT.

Closed captioning will be available.
