“Material characterization in the advanced material testing and evaluation laboratory with some applications to hypersonic air vehicle research”

The Advanced Material Testing and Evaluation Laboratory (AMTEL) is a user-based lab working with professors, students, and researchers across campus. Current projects span departments including Mechanical Science and Engineering, Bioengineering, Aerospace, and Civil Engineering in addition to work with companies at the research park. This talk will detail some of the recent experimental research conducted in AMTEL focusing on hard materials ranging from bone characterization, high strain rate material characterization, graphite failure characterization and steel plasticity, and shape memory alloys. Additionally, current research conducted by AMTEL staff into the thermo-mechanical characterization of metallic structures in high speed wind tunnels will also be discussed.
