There are strong motivations and various enabling processing innovations that increase the rate of discovery of new metallic materials. However, identification of design-guidelines that ensure superior property combinations remains as a serious challenge. Here in this talk, we will discuss several case studies that demonstrate that the fundamental focus should be on exploration of new mechanisms, and that in-situ techniques provide key insights for that purpose.
