Join us in 1005 Beckman September 1, 2026 for our first Fall Tech Talk with Abdelghany Abouelnagga, graduate student in ECE: "Scaling InGaN/GaN Micro-LEDs from Discrete Devices to Dense Arrays and GHz-Class Active Emitters for High-Speed Optical Links"

The talk will present the micro-fabrication and characterization of scaled GaN micro-LEDs, with portions of the work carried out at the Beckman Institute. The work highlights how micro-LEDs can reshape data-center optical interconnects by enabling highly parallel, low-energy optical links with bandwidth scaling that conventional laser-based solutions struggle to sustain at extreme integration densities. The talk will then address the key challenges that still limit the incorporation of micro-LEDs into present data-center architectures, parasitic impedance, optical coupling, and array-level crosstalk. Finally, it will show how advanced electrical, optical, and RF characterization can identify the dominant bottlenecks and guide device- and process-level strategies to unlock the full potential of micro-LED-based optical links.
