Abstract: Reliable estimates of the distribution and abundance of animals are vital for managers to effectively monitor wildlife, yet many monitoring methods are prone to error or are logistically infeasible for large-scale implementation. Camera traps are an ideal non-invasive monitoring method for terrestrial mammals, particularly for furbearing carnivores which are often elusive or difficult to study. We use a statewide network of camera traps to monitor population trends of conservation-priority mammals in Illinois, and use these data to investigate other aspects of mammal ecology and behavior.
