From Nonfiction to Fiction and Back: Excavating a Memoir from The New Internationals

Writing the new novel, The New Internationals—which tells the story of an unlikely love triangle between a Holocaust survivor, a student from the region of colonial West Africa that had been known as the Slave Coast, and a Black GI, characters based upon Professor Wright Faladé's parents—took two decades and, with each new discovery during research, illustrated the cliché that fact is indeed stranger than most fiction we could imagine. Now, Professor Wright Faladé has begun a nonfiction treatment of the material— what The New Yorker calls “Personal History” (rather than “memoir”)—that aims to explore the “mixedness” that is at the heart of Americanness.
