The IGB’s Art of Science program is a celebration of the common ground between science and art. Images from Illinois research were the starting point for these works, created by scientists working in partnership with current IGB artist Julia Pollack. These pieces are the result of conversations between the scientists and the artist, and are an abstract visual exploration to highlight the power and aesthetics of science imagery.

This year’s exhibit revolves around the theme of “Efflorescence.” Efflorescence is the process of budding and unfolding of blossoms. Every idea starts as a small seed of a thought. As you hypothesize, investigate, and reconsider the world around you, more ideas burst forth. Over time, this work produces a line of inquiry, gently prodding new possibilities while producing flowers of fully developed ideas. The artist created this image by superimposing colorectal cancer cells on chrysanthemum flower images, reminding us that in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, hope springs eternal.
